Description:   “Stone Designs” is a 1 hour presentation worth 1 LU and HSW credit.

Topics Covered:

In this presentation the presenter will discuss formation of natural stone and compare that with the natural process technology of manufacturing calcium silicate stone units.  Architectural detailing for stone masonry veneers promoting moisture management principles and considerations for control of movement in masonry walls is covered.  A variety of design styles incorporating stone masonry materials are highlighted.

Learning Objective:

  • Understand the Mechanism of quarried and Calcium Silicate Stone formation
  • Identify Calcium Silicate Stone composition and properties’ influences on design decisions
  • Appreciate the effect of different masonry materials on movements
  • Utilize proper detailing techniques for moisture management in a masonry veneer wall system
  • Recognize the overall design versatility of stone as a cladding material.

SARA Design Competition – Open to Students!

Just a note for students interested in submitting–All projects are eligibile, whether practical , theoretical, or artistic in nature. To submit a Declaration of Intent your project does not yet have to be complete, you are just saying you want to enter the competition. The finalized submissions are due February 27th March 16th. Keep this in mind with your current studio projects!
